HISTORY
The Renmark Bowling Club was proposed at the 1931 annual meeting of the Renmark Hotel.
W.H.Holden proposed that a bowling green be established in front of the hotel as he knew many guests left the hotel and went elsewhere because of recently established greens (Renmark Club had opened the first green in Renmark in 1926).
The Murray Pioneer of January 18, 1934 excerpt read:
“ideally situated next to the Renmark Hotel on Murray Avenue and overlooking the river, the site where this old and always neatly kept cottage stood, has been bought by the Hotel committee for their vegetable garden. Where the present kitchen garden is on the riverfront, it’s proposed to establish a bowling green.”
The bowling green resulted from a petition signed by 114 residents.
The Murray Pioneer of January 31, 1935 excerpt read (in part):
“The bowling green is to be opened in about 2 weeks.”
There were two greens on the river side of Murray Avenue, one close to where the Tourist Information Office is, and the other back towards the front of the hotel. Another was later added to approximately where the motel units beside the Hotel are.
The original green beside the river appears to have had 4 or 5 rinks (see photo marked as such in IMAGES on this site. The photo shows a levee bank along the river side of the green. This green we have been informed was used by the lady members).
The third green beside the hotel (where motel units are) was also a full sized green.
In 1972, The club was re-located to our current site on Council land in Cowra Street (3 new grass greens and a new clubhouse). Today, the club is served by 2 artificial greens which afford the luxury of being able to play on quality surfaces all year round. Both greens are floodlit allowing for night bowling. The third green is still there and is maintained with a grass surface (currently not suitable for lawn bowls).
We are a community club with an ongoing lease of the site (all improvements belong to the Club).
